Filming in Cornwall? Why Agile Location Catering is Your Secret Weapon

Cornwall's dramatic coastlines, wild moors, and ancient woodlands make it one of the UK's most desirable filming locations. From Poldark to House of the Dragon, the South West offers backdrops you cannot get anywhere else.

But as any Location Manager knows, the very landscape that looks great on camera is a nightmare for logistics. Narrow single-track lanes, soft sandy beaches, and remote cliff-tops make standard catering trucks a liability. If your food truck is parked half a mile away on a verge, your crew is not eating hot food. And a hungry crew is a slow crew.

Salt Wind Catering has built a film and TV crew catering service specifically designed for Cornwall and Devon locations. We are based in Redruth and we know every TR and PL postcode. We have set up on beaches with no vehicle access, in woodland clearings, at clifftop locations, and inside derelict buildings. If there is a way to get food to your crew, we will find it.

Why Standard Catering Trucks Fail on Cornish Locations

The catering trucks that work fine on a studio lot or a motorway-adjacent location become a serious problem in Cornwall. Here is what we see go wrong with non-specialist caterers on Cornish shoots:

  • Vehicles too large for single-track access roads, requiring crew to walk 15 to 30 minutes from set to food and back

  • Setup at a distance from the working area, meaning meal breaks extend beyond schedule

  • Dependency on mains power or large generators that cannot be positioned near protected coastal or heritage sites

  • Inability to reposition mid-shoot when the location director moves the unit to a different spot

  • Menu inflexibility when the call sheet changes overnight and crew sizes shift

Our Modular Field Kitchen

We operate a modular gazebo kitchen system that sets up in under 45 minutes with a two-person team. The entire unit is self-powered, self-contained, and can be relocated within a location mid-shoot if required. No mains power. No water connection needed. No fixed infrastructure.

The kitchen produces the same output as a full-service catering operation: hot breakfasts, running lunches, craft service, and evening meals for night shoots. We carry full commercial cooking equipment including ovens, hobs, bain-maries, and coffee stations. Everything comes off our vehicles and assembles on-site.

What We Serve on Set

Our menus are built for working crews, not dinner parties. The food is substantial, varied, and timed precisely to call sheet breaks. We adjust daily based on your schedule and crew numbers.

  • Hot breakfasts from 6am. Full cooked breakfast with eggs to order, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and vegetarian alternatives.

  • Running lunch service. Hot main, sides, salads, and fresh bread. Service kept open for rolling breaks on busy shooting days.

  • All-day craft service. Hot and cold drinks, fruit, pastries, granola bars, soup, and light bites available throughout the day without disruption to the shoot.

  • Evening and night shoot meals. Substantial hot meals for late finishes, served efficiently to maintain energy and morale.

  • Barista coffee. Proper espresso-based drinks, not a push-button machine. Crews notice the difference.

Dietary Requirements on Set

A film crew of 30 to 60 people will typically include a significant range of dietary requirements. We handle this as a matter of routine, not as an exceptional request. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, and allergen-specific meals are all produced in the same service window with clearly labelled separate presentation.

We prefer to receive a dietary breakdown when we receive the call sheet. If that is not available, flag requirements to our lead chef at morning briefing and we will accommodate within the session.

How Quickly Can We Mobilise?

We can typically mobilise within 24 to 48 hours. We are based in Redruth and cover all TR and PL postcodes as standard. For productions based in Bristol, London, or elsewhere, we are the local solution your Location Manager calls when the original caterer falls through, when a last-minute additional day is scheduled, or when the unit moves to a secondary location that requires a smaller, more agile operation.

We have supplied emergency same-day catering for productions filming in Cornwall when primary caterers experienced vehicle breakdowns, crew shortages, and access issues. We know the roads, the access points, and the logistical quirks of filming in the South West.

Productions We Have Supported in the South West

We have catered for film and TV productions including social shoots, documentary crews, commercial productions, and high-profile broadcast content filmed across Cornwall and Devon. Our clients include Omaze UK and other production companies with shoots at both accessible and remote locations across the peninsula.

We understand production workflows, call sheet culture, and the pressure that Location Managers are under. We do not need hand-holding on set. We arrive ready, set up quickly, and get out of the way until we are needed.
