Salcombe Catering | South Hams Hog Roasts & BBQs | Salt Wind
Catering in Salcombe — Estuary-Side Hog Roasts, BBQs and Seafood Platters
Catering in Salcombe for 20 to 200+ guests covering estuary weddings, holiday-home parties, sailing-club events and corporate retreats. Salt Wind Catering covers Salcombe from Redruth, around 2h15 via the A30 and A38.
Salcombe sits at the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary — a deep, sheltered ria of blue water, sailing boats, and pastel-painted houses climbing the hillside above Whitestrand and Normandy Pontoon. It's one of South Devon's most affluent corners, with a holiday-home density that pushes prices up and brings a steady year-round demand for high-end private catering. Salcombe Yacht Club, the regatta in August, and the dense network of sailing clubs around the estuary all anchor the social calendar.
Salt Wind Catering covers Salcombe from our Redruth kitchen. It's a longer run than our Cornwall bookings — about 2h15 via the A30 east, the A38 across Dartmoor's southern edge, then the A381 down through Kingsbridge to the estuary. We factor that into the schedule and plan an early start. For Salcombe events, we typically arrive the day before for setup-heavy bookings, or get on the road by 5am for a midday service.
Whether it's an estuary-side wedding at a private property in East Portlemouth, a sailing-club birthday at one of the Yacht Club functions, a milestone celebration at a holiday home in North Sands or South Sands, or a corporate retreat at one of the headland hotels, we bring the food, the kit, and the service. Our setup is self-contained — no venue kitchen needed.
Getting to Salcombe — Route, Travel Time and Access
Salcombe access is the same access that gives the town its character — narrow lanes, steep gradients, and a one-way system in the centre that gets congested in August. The A381 down through Kingsbridge is the main artery and it's usually fine outside of regatta week. Once you're below the main town, vehicle width matters: some of the hillside properties have driveways that won't take a large van. We scout ahead, bring the right-sized kit vehicle, and plan summer arrivals early. The Salcombe-East Portlemouth ferry doesn't carry vehicles, so anything across the estuary goes the long way round via Kingsbridge.
What Salcombe Events Look Like
Salcombe events skew premium and private. Estuary-view weddings at large rented houses for 50 to 150 guests. Milestone birthdays — 50ths through to 80ths — at holiday homes overlooking the water. Sailing-club celebrations and regatta-week parties in August. Corporate retreats and client hospitality at the larger hotels and private rentals. Family reunions in big self-catered properties around the Kingsbridge estuary. Wakes and memorial gatherings handled with care at private homes or village halls in the South Hams villages.
Hog Roast Catering
Hog roast catering is the centrepiece for Salcombe weddings and milestone birthdays. Whole hog from a trusted farm, slow-roasted on-site over real charcoal. Crackling cut to order, served with apple sauce, stuffing, and proper rolls.
BBQ Catering
BBQ catering runs on premium charcoal kit with proper meats, vibrant salads, and genuine smoke flavour. Built for sailing-club summer parties, garden weddings overlooking the estuary, and corporate away-days where the cooking becomes part of the entertainment.
Seafood Platters & Buffets
Cornish seafood platters are a natural fit for a sailing town. Local crab, smoked fish, and shellfish presented beautifully. We also deliver event and party buffets ready to set out at the venue — sandwich platters, savoury boards, hot buffet platters, and sharing platters.
Giant Pan Catering
Giant pan catering — paella, seafood curry, and lamb tagine cooked live in massive pans. A showstopper for marquee weddings on the lawn of a hillside property and sunset gatherings above South Sands.
Salcombe Venues and Locations We Cover
Estuary-Side Holiday Homes
The cluster of large holiday rentals around Cliff Road, Devon Road, and the lanes climbing up from the harbour host the bulk of private celebrations in Salcombe. Big self-catered houses with terraces over the water are built for the kind of garden weddings and milestone birthdays we cater. No venue kitchen needed — we set up outside.
North Sands, South Sands & East Portlemouth
The beaches either side of the harbour mouth, and the slope of East Portlemouth across the ferry, host the most photogenic private events in the area. Marquee weddings on the lawn of a hillside property, sunset BBQs above South Sands, sailing-club celebrations at the water's edge — our giant pan paella and charcoal BBQ both work brilliantly in this setting.
Sailing Clubs & Private Venues
Salcombe Yacht Club and the smaller sailing clubs around the estuary host private functions, regatta dinners, and members' events. We work with the venue or set up outdoors depending on what the day needs. Hog roasts, paella stations, and full event buffets are all on the table.
Beyond Weddings — Corporate, Wakes and Holiday-Home Catering
Salcombe runs a full calendar of private events. Corporate retreats and away-days at the larger hotels. Funeral catering for wakes and memorial gatherings at private homes or village halls. Holiday home catering — welcome hampers, BBQ kits, evening buffets — for the weekly turnover of self-catered guests around the estuary.

Frequently Asked Questions — Catering in Salcombe
How far is Salt Wind from Salcombe?
About 2h15 from our Redruth kitchen via the A30, A38, and A381. Salcombe is one of the furthest points we regularly cover. We factor the travel into the schedule and either arrive the day before or set off very early for midday service.
Do you cater for Salcombe estuary weddings?
Yes. Estuary-side weddings at private holiday homes are one of our most common Salcombe bookings. Our setup is self-contained — no kitchen, power, or water required — which is essential for the hillside properties where venue facilities are limited.
Can you cater during Salcombe Regatta week?
Yes, with early booking. Regatta week in early August is the busiest period of the year in Salcombe and the town gets very congested. We can cater private events during regatta week but we recommend booking 4 to 6 months ahead and discussing logistics for vehicle access and timing.
What about narrow lane access to hillside properties?
We plan vehicle access for every Salcombe booking. The lanes around Cliff Road and the East Portlemouth side need appropriately sized vehicles. We scout ahead where we can, bring the right kit, and build in extra time.
Do you cover Kingsbridge and the wider South Hams?
Yes. Kingsbridge, the villages around the estuary, Dartmouth, Totnes, and the wider South Hams are all within our Devon coverage. The same trip from Redruth covers the whole area.
What is the minimum guest count for a Salcombe booking?
Given the travel distance, we typically work with 30+ guests for hog roast, BBQ, and giant pan setups in Salcombe. For sharing platters and delivered buffets we can do smaller numbers, but the travel charge becomes a bigger proportion of the bill.
