Where we cater, and what travel costs

Salt Wind Catering works out of Redruth, right on the A30, which puts most of Cornwall inside an hour of our kitchen and keeps Devon well within reach.

We cook on site. Hog roasts, BBQs, our 70cm and 90cm paella pans, breakfasts, welfare feeds — these are cooked at your venue, in front of your guests, not driven to you. Distance doesn't affect the food. It affects the logistics, and we price that openly below rather than burying it in a quote.

Everything cold or pre-prepared — buffets, platters, hampers, holiday home deliveries — travels in temperature-controlled transport under our full food safety procedures, within the delivery area set out below.

Zones follow postcodes, because that's how we actually work a quote out. A few Cornish towns carry PL postcodes — they're still Cornwall, and still Zone 1.

Delivered food: On-site cooking is the right fit here. Delivered cold buffets run to mid-Devon above £750, and we do not deliver cold food to far or north Devon at all — two hours in a van is not fresh, and we would rather say so than send it.

Travel below a threshold is £1 per mile round-trip from Redruth — worked out from your postcode, itemised on your quote, and never adjusted afterwards.

Why we publish this

Plenty of caterers list every town in the South West and work the travel cost into the quote where you can't see it. We'd rather you knew before you enquired. It means the figure we give you is the figure you pay, and it means we only take on work we can execute properly — which is how a 5-star record stays a 5-star record across 602+ events.

Barnstaple

Bodmin

Bodmin's proximity to Lanhydrock House and the edge of Bodmin Moor makes it a popular location for wedding receptions and outdoor celebrations.

Bude

Just minutes from our Redruth kitchen, Camborne is one of the quickest areas we deliver to -- ideal for last-minute orders and same-day catering.

Charlestown

Charlestown's Georgian harbour and tall ships have been used as a filming location for Poldark and other productions, and the quayside venues host weddings and private functions year-round.

Crediton

Crediton sits in mid-Devon close to Exeter. We cover the town for on-site events across the Creedy valley.

Dartmouth

Exmouth

Exmouth marks the western gateway to the Jurassic Coast. We cater on-site here for events across the Exe estuary area.

Falmouth

Falmouth's natural harbour, university campus, and castle grounds provide some of the most scenic event venues in Cornwall.

Fowey

Fowey's narrow streets and waterfront venues mean self-contained catering is often essential -- we bring everything we need with no venue kitchen required.

Hayle

Hayle's towans (sand dunes) and holiday parks along St Ives Bay generate strong demand for delivered party food and on-site BBQ catering during the summer.

Helston

As the traditional gateway to Cornwall, Launceston draws guests from Devon and beyond. The castle grounds and surrounding countryside offer characterful event settings.

Liskeard

Liskeard's central position in southeast Cornwall makes it a convenient gathering point for events drawing guests from across the county and from Plymouth.

Looe

Looe's harbour-front restaurants and holiday cottages make it a popular destination. We deliver regularly to holiday lets and private events along the coast here.

Mullion

Mullion and the surrounding Lizard peninsula villages often have limited venue kitchen facilities, making our fully self-sufficient service particularly valued here.

Newquay

Salcombe sits at the mouth of its estuary in the South Hams. As one of the furthest points we travel to, we cater Salcombe on-site for events that justify the journey — typically hog roasts, BBQs and giant pan catering for 50+ guests.

Saltash

Saltash sits at the gateway to Cornwall, connected to Plymouth by Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge. Events here often draw guests from both sides of the Tamar.

Totnes

Totnes sits on the River Dart in the South Hams. We cater on-site here for events across the town and surrounding area.

Truro

As Cornwall's county town and administrative centre, Truro hosts the highest concentration of corporate events, council functions, and formal celebrations in the county.

Wadebridge

Wadebridge hosts the Royal Cornwall Show each June, and the Camel Trail running through town makes it a hub for outdoor events and cycling-related functions.

Coverage & Travel FAQs

Do you charge for travel?

Not in Cornwall — anywhere in a TR postcode, or the Cornish PL districts, is standard pricing with no travel charge and no minimum spend. Beyond that, travel is included once your order passes a threshold: £500 for Plymouth, Tavistock and Ivybridge, £1,500 for the rest of Devon. Below the threshold it is £1 per mile round-trip from our Redruth kitchen, worked out from your postcode and shown on your quote before you commit to anything.

How is the travel charge calculated?

£1 per mile, round-trip, measured from TR15 in Redruth to your venue. It is arithmetic, not a judgement call, and it appears as its own line on your quote — never as a surprise adjustment on the final invoice.

Do you deliver cold buffets and platters to Devon?

To Plymouth, Tavistock and Ivybridge, yes — routinely. To mid-Devon we deliver above £750, though an on-site cooked event is usually the better fit at that spend. To far and north Devon we do not deliver cold food at all. Cold food that has been in a van for two hours is not food we want to put our name on, so we say no rather than send it. On-site cooking — hog roast, BBQ, giant pan — travels anywhere.

Is there a minimum spend?

No minimum spend anywhere in Cornwall. Outside Cornwall there is no minimum either — the thresholds above decide whether travel is included, not whether we will take the booking. Our service minimums are about guest numbers, not distance: 20 guests for a delivered buffet, 50 for on-site hog roast, BBQ or giant pan.

What if my event is outside these areas?

Ask anyway. We have travelled well beyond Devon for multi-day film and TV work, festivals and corporate residentials. If it works for both of us we will tell you honestly what it costs. If it does not, we will say so rather than take the booking and stretch ourselves thin.

Do you cater on the Isles of Scilly?

By arrangement only, for on-site cooked events, with freight and crew travel quoted separately. Talk to us early — Scilly logistics need lead time.
