Hot food where the work is

Salt Wind Catering provides welfare catering across Cornwall and Devon for utility contractors, highways gangs, council maintenance teams, telecoms engineers and emergency response crews. Hot meals on time, every shift, in any weather.

Welfare catering is procurement language for site catering with structure: a defined call time, a known crew size, a fixed point on site where food is reliably ready. Our mobile kitchen runs entirely off-grid — gas, charcoal, generators, our own water — so we set up wherever the work is, including remote moorland, coastal access points and roadside compounds with no mains anything.

Who we cater welfare for

From single-day callouts to multi-week project welfare — we work with the contractors, councils and utility companies operating across the South West.

Utility & infrastructure

National Grid, water companies, distribution network operators, fibre rollout crews.

Highways & civils

Resurfacing teams, road gangs, bridge works, drainage and verge maintenance.

Council & maintenance

Local authority maintenance teams, parks and grounds crews, public realm works.

Telecoms & comms

Mast engineers, fibre splicers, repeater and small-cell rollout teams.

What we provide on site

Built around what site crews actually want after a long shift. Hot, substantial, properly seasoned. Not finger food.

Hot breakfast runs

Bacon and sausage rolls, breakfast wraps, porridge, fruit and a hot drinks station from first light.

Hot lunch service

Substantial cooked lunches built for crews working in the cold and wet — hog roast, BBQ, giant pan, or street food formats depending on numbers.

Standby and snacks

Mid-morning and afternoon hot snacks, cold drinks, fresh fruit. Held ready for whenever the foreman calls a break.

Hot drinks station

Tea, coffee, hot chocolate kept running across the working day. Drinks station only — no full bar service.

Note: drinks station only — Salt Wind Catering does not provide bar service or alcoholic drinks packages.

Completely off-grid

No mains power. No mains water. No reliance on the welfare unit, the site office, or whatever facilities the compound happens to have. Salt Wind Catering brings the kitchen, the fuel, the water, and the waste plan with us.

That matters on welfare contracts because the work moves. A fibre run shifts ten miles down the road. A water main job extends a week. A response crew gets stood up in a remote car park. We mobilise to wherever the work is, set up fast, and feed the crew the same way we would on a fully serviced venue.

Built around the site schedule

Pre-dawn breakfast

Hot breakfast service ready 30 minutes before crew call — including 4am and 5am starts where the schedule needs it.

Late finish cover

Hot lunch held back for late breaks and standby food running until the work stops.

Weekends and bank holidays

Seven-day cover — utility and emergency work does not stop, and neither do we when contracted.

Mid-project flex

Crew numbers shift, schedules slip, weather days happen. We adjust covers and timings against the live job.

South West coverage

Based in Redruth, Cornwall. Cornwall covered as standard with no travel supplement. Devon and the wider South West carry a mileage-based supplement from base, confirmed in writing before you commit.

Welfare catering FAQs

What does welfare catering involve?

Hot meals and drinks for site crews, engineers, and response workers — typically breakfast runs from early call, hot lunch service, and standby provisions across the working day. Salt Wind Catering operates entirely off-grid, so no mains power or water is needed at the welfare point.

Do you cover early starts and weekends?

Yes. Welfare contracts run on the site schedule, not ours. Pre-dawn breakfast service, late finishes, weekends and bank holidays are all standard. We confirm exact call times in the written quote before you commit.

How far do you travel from Redruth?

Cornwall is covered as standard. Devon and the wider South West carry a mileage-based travel supplement, confirmed in writing up front. We have catered welfare jobs across the South West peninsula — utility, civils, and emergency response.

Are you accredited for site catering?

Yes. NCASS member, 5-star food hygiene rating from Cornwall Council, and £10 million public liability and employer liability insurance. Documentation is sent direct to your procurement or HSE team on request.
