Practical catering notes for Gloucestershire's most-used filming locations — Cotswold villages, Gloucester Cathedral and the Forest of Dean.

Film crew eating a hot meal at a unit base — on-set catering by Salt Wind Catering

Gloucestershire spans honey-stone Cotswold villages, Gloucester’s cathedral cloisters (Harry Potter) and the ancient woodland of the Forest of Dean — a location favourite for Star Wars, Sex Education and His Dark Materials. Salt Wind Catering works each on its own terms, off-grid where the woodland has no power.

Gloucestershire filming locations — catering notes

01

Gloucester Cathedral & Docks

The cloisters stood in for Hogwarts (Harry Potter); the Victorian docks host period drama. City base with cathedral liaison and timed access around visitors.

02

Forest of Dean

Ancient woodland used for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Sex Education and His Dark Materials. Off-grid woodland bases — generators, gas and water all self-supplied.

03

Puzzlewood

Otherworldly moss-covered woodland (Star Wars, Doctor Who, Merlin). Off-grid; we base at the site entrance and carry in.

04

Bibury & Arlington Row

The quintessential Cotswold village — endless period work. Narrow lanes call for a compact, well-drilled base.

05

Sudeley Castle

Tudor castle and gardens in regular drama use. Country-house unit-base with room for vehicles and marquees.

06

Berkeley Castle

Medieval castle used for Wolf Hall and The Other Boleyn Girl. Estate bases coordinated with the site.

07

Lower & Upper Slaughter, Bourton

Chocolate-box Cotswold villages and the "Venice of the Cotswolds". Small village bases and tight lanes.

08

Severn Vale & Slimbridge

Wetland, river and wide skies. Remote, self-contained bases with no mains needed.

Self-contained mobile kitchen — gas, generators, water and refrigeration on board. No mains power or venue kitchen needed.

How we approach access

Every filming location has its own constraints — vehicle access, pitch size, kit-carrying distance, mains availability (almost always none), wind exposure and landowner conditions. We coordinate with the production location manager in advance on every shoot.

Where the unit can pitch at the shoot point we run the mobile kitchen live; where access stops short we set up a sensible unit base nearby and run scheduled hot-boxed service rounds. Either way the food gets there hot and on time. We travel from our Cornwall base — travel, and accommodation for multi-day shoots, is confirmed in writing up front.

Gloucestershire Filming Locations FAQs

Yes. Salt Wind Catering is set up to feed crews at the Gloucestershire locations on this page. Each has its own access constraints, which we coordinate with the production location manager in advance. We travel from our Cornwall base with a fully self-contained mobile kitchen.
Drop-and-serve. We cook at a sensible nearby unit base where the vehicle can park, then hot-box and deliver to the shoot point on a scheduled service round.
Usually yes — many headline locations are National Trust, council or private-estate sites. The production location manager handles permissions; we work to whatever pitch is allocated and flag any kit-access constraints in advance.
The deep Forest of Dean and Puzzlewood — no power and restricted vehicle access mean fully off-grid working with a base at the nearest firm access and a carry to set.
