What event catering actually costs in Cornwall

Salt Wind Catering runs out of Redruth and covers every postcode in Cornwall plus most of Devon. Our prices include VAT at 20%, so the numbers below are the numbers on the invoice — nothing is added at quote stage and no admin fee tagged onto the bottom. Here is the honest breakdown of what each catering type costs per head, what moves the price up or down, and what is and is not included.

Most enquiries land in one of five buckets — cold buffet, hot buffet, BBQ, hog roast or giant-pan paella. Per-head ranges below are pulled from our live menu data; itemised quotes are returned the same day during office hours.

Hog roast

Cornish pork joints, slow-roasted and carved on site

from £11.00 per head

Free-range Cornish pork, slow-roasted on-site. Rolls, apple sauce, crackling, stuffing, salads. The headline number depends on whether it is rolls-only or a full plated hog roast with multiple sides.

Giant-pan paella & street food

Live cooking station, on-site

from £12.25 per head

What pushes the per-head price up or down

1. Guest numbers

The biggest single lever. A hog roast for 40 carries the same fixed cook-team and equipment cost as a hog roast for 120 — so the per-head number drops sharply as headcount climbs. Below the 50-guest on-site minimum the maths stops working; that is where delivered packs make more sense.

2. Distance from Redruth

We are based on the A30 corridor in Redruth, which makes Truro, Camborne, Hayle, Falmouth, St Ives, Penzance, Newquay and St Agnes effectively local. Events past Bodmin, on the North Cornwall coast, or into Devon (Plymouth, Exeter, Bideford, Bude) attract a travel supplement — itemised on the quote, never hidden in the per-head rate.

3. Menu complexity

A single-protein buffet is cheaper to run than a multi-station spread. Adding live carvery, a dessert station, or premium ingredients (Cornish lobster, day-boat seafood, slow-cooked beef brisket) moves the per-head up. We always quote two or three menu tiers so the trade-off is visible up-front.

4. On-site vs delivered

On-site cooking adds a cook-team day rate (typically £180–£280 depending on hours and headcount). For groups over 50 this is absorbed cleanly into the per-head rate. Delivered hot or cold buffets have no cook-team fee — just the food, transit, and any travel supplement.

5. Date and seasonality

August Saturdays and bank-holiday weekends sit at the top of our pricing band because cook-team availability is tight. Mid-week dates and shoulder-season (March–May, October) often run at the lower end of the published range. Christmas-party season carries its own pricing — see the Christmas catering page.

“We had big pans from salt wind for our wedding and the food was AMAZING. Mark and his team could not have been more helpful throughout the whole process and were a dream to work with. Nothing was ever too much trouble and so many people have said how lovely the food was. I’d book them for another event in a heart beat!”

Pricing questions, answered

Salt Wind Catering prices start at £7.95 per head for a cold finger buffet and £16.95 per head for hot buffets. Charcoal BBQ catering starts from £8.45 per head delivered (£9.95 cooked on-site), hog roasts from £9.15 per head delivered (£11 on-site), and giant-pan paella around £12.25 per head. Final price depends on guest numbers, menu choice, distance from Redruth, and complexity of the set-up.
Four things move the number most: headcount (bigger groups bring the per-head cost down), menu complexity (a cold finger buffet is cheaper than a live hog roast with three sides), distance (travel surcharges apply for events more than 30 miles from Redruth or into Devon), and whether we cook on-site or deliver. Weekend bank-holiday weekends and peak August dates can also carry a small premium because cook-team availability is tighter.
Delivered buffets start from a £30 minimum (around 5–6 people on the cold range). On-site cooking has a 50-guest minimum for charcoal BBQ and hog roast — below that the on-site set-up cost outweighs the saving versus a delivered hot buffet. Giant-pan paella and street food start from around 30 guests on-site. For very small groups, the delivered buffet route is the right call.
Inside our core Cornwall delivery zone (Redruth, Camborne, Truro, Falmouth, St Ives, Penzance, Newquay) delivery is included for orders over the minimum. Cornwall — including North Cornwall and Bude — is always free. Into Devon, travel is free over £500 to Plymouth and Tavistock and over £1,500 elsewhere, itemised on the quote. We never bake a hidden fee into the per-head number.
Our catering prices include VAT at 20%, so the price you see is the price you pay — nothing is added at quote stage. Production catering is quoted per head +VAT, because productions reclaim it.
For events more than 21 days away, standard terms are a 30% deposit to confirm the booking and the 70% balance due 7 days before the event. Deposits are paid via Square invoice (card or bank transfer). For corporate and film/TV accounts we can arrange 30-day terms on application. Late payment is charged at 4% above Bank of England base rate per the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act.
Yes — every booking gets an itemised quote covering menu, headcount, on-site cook fee (if applicable), travel, and any extras. The quote is locked in once you pay the deposit. If your guest numbers change before the event, we re-quote on the new headcount up to 7 days before the date.
