What is location catering?
Location catering feeds a film or TV crew from a self-contained mobile kitchen at the unit base — hot breakfast at call time, multi-course lunches and dinners, and craft service kept stocked through the shoot day. It's also known as unit base catering. Salt Wind Catering runs unit bases across Cornwall and Devon, reaching remote locations with no mains power or water. A full crew day starts from £30 +VAT per head, tailored per production by quote.
Crew fed properly, from call to wrap
Salt Wind Catering runs unit base catering for productions shooting in Cornwall — full crew feeding from breakfast call through to wrap. Hot lunches served from the truck, craft service kept rolling across the day, dietary lists handled across cast and crew. Self-contained mobile kitchen, NDA as standard, broadcast and commercial production experience.
We are the supplier you work with when you want one number for breakfast, lunch and craft — not three. The line producer sees an itemised quote (breakfast / lunch / craft), the locations manager hands us a pitch reference and a call sheet, the production coordinator gets the dietary list signed off in writing before shoot day. No surprises on the final invoice. No improvising at the truck on a wet morning.
We have catered 602+ events across Cornwall & Devon since 2024, hold a 5.0★ rating from 61 reviews, and scale crew feeding from 20 covers upwards — from a tight commercial unit to a full feature crew. Where a split unit or staggered call means people cannot reach the truck, we hot-box meals to set so the second unit eats hot too. A local team on the ground in the South-West, not a truck driven down for the week.
For productions that need facilities as well as food, we work alongside JW Film Facilities — a Cornwall-based facilities and transport company providing honey wagons, green rooms, makeup and costume trailers, generators and unit transport. Together that means catering and full unit-base facilities from local teams who know Cornwall.

Why use a local unit-base caterer over trucking it in?
Cornwall is a major UK filming region, and the food for a remote unit base is easier when the kitchen is already in the South-West. Here is how a caterer on the ground compares with one travelling in from up-country.
| Consideration | Salt Wind Catering on the ground in the South-West | A nationwide caterer travelling in |
|---|---|---|
| Response & lead time | 24–48hr mobilisation for Cornwall units; recce attended in person without a long haul. | Days of lead time to position vehicles and crew before a shoot day. |
| Cornish location knowledge | Local read on access, tides and remote sites — clifftops, beaches, moorland, working farms, harbour walls. | Reliant on the production to brief access and ground conditions cold. |
| Road miles & carbon | Short runs from a Redruth base — few road miles and short food miles on your carbon report. | Long-distance vehicle movements on every shoot day, added to the production's footprint. |
| Self-contained setup | Mobile kitchen brings its own gas, water and fridges — no mains power or water needed on location. | May still need to be fully self-contained, but troubleshooting is far from home base. |

Book your location caterer as soon as shoot dates and unit base are confirmed — 3–6 weeks for a standard shoot, earlier for summer or multi-week productions. Short-notice bookings welcome too.

Feeding an international cast and crew on location in Cornwall is less glamorous than it sounds and more precise than you'd think. Here is what a full day on set actually looks like from the catering truck — and the small details that keep a German TV production running on time.

We would rather you knew both halves before you enquire than find out later.
Included as standard
- The cook team. On site, cooking through service, included in the per-head price — not an extra line on the quote.
- All the equipment. Grill or roasting units, gazebo, serving station and our own gas. We arrive self-contained.
- Setup and pack-down. We set up before guests arrive and take everything away with us, including our waste.
- Disposable plates, cutlery and napkins. Included as standard so nothing has to be hired in.
- Dietary options. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free at no surcharge. Tell us the numbers when you book.
What we don't do
We are a cook team, not a front-of-house team. That is deliberate — it is why the food is what you are paying for.
- No waiting or front-of-house staff. Our cook team cooks; your guests help themselves.
- No silver service or plated meals. We never plate for guests — it is feast-style throughout.
- No crockery, glassware or linen hire. Disposable plates, cutlery and napkins are included; anything smarter comes from your venue or hire company.
- No bar, drinks service or corkage. We cater the food so you are free to sort drinks however suits you.
- No private dining. Sharing platters and live cooking are what we do well.
Travel is quoted before you book, never added afterwards. Not sure whether we fit? Call 01209 206255and we will tell you straight.
