Catering for the events that fund the cause

School PTAs, sports club committees, charity boards and parish hall trustees all share one quiet problem — they need decent catering that does not eat the fundraising target. The numbers have to add up, the food has to look like it was worth turning up for, and someone on the committee has to be able to sign it off without an awkward conversation at the next AGM.

We are a small Cornish cook team — not a faceless events company — and we cater for community events every week through the year. School summer fetes, rugby club presentation nights, charity fundraising dinners, village hall quiz nights, sports tour send-offs, Christmas committee lunches. Most of it is delivered hot or cold buffet, dropped to the hall or clubhouse and set up on platters. Some of it is on-site cooking — a charcoal BBQ on a school field, a hog roast at a fete, paella at a club anniversary.

Direct invoicing to the school, club or registered charity is standard. We take 30% deposit to hold the date, balance is due seven days before. We send the food hygiene certificate, NCASS accreditation and £5m public liability cover through with the quote, which is usually what the caretaker or hall committee needs to pre-approve us on site.

For a quick steer on costs and menus, the catering prices guide sets out the standard rates, or jump straight to the quote form with your headcount, venue postcode and event date.

The right format for the event

Bulk delivered buffet — the workhorse

Cold buffet from £6.75pp, hot buffet from £8.50pp. Dropped to the village hall, clubhouse or school staff room on disposable platters. Quiz nights, AGMs, presentation evenings, end-of-term lunches. Scales cleanly from 30 to 300 covers — see the village hall catering guide for the full menu set.

Hog roast — the fundraiser margin-maker

A whole Cornish pig on the spit, carved live. From £14pp at trade rates — sell rolls at £8 to £10 each and the margin stays with the cause. Visible cooking doubles as entertainment, the queue keeps moving, and the smell pulls people across the field. Best fit for school fetes, summer fairs and ticketed charity events. Charcoal BBQ — sports clubs & school events

Burgers, sausages, halloumi wraps, chicken thighs, salads. From £14pp on-site, 50-guest minimum. Right for rugby and football presentation nights, school sports day staff catering, charity walk finishers and family fundraiser days. BBQ catering Cornwall →

Kid-friendly menus & family events

For school and family-charity events with children, we pull the heat out, add the crowd-pleasers (sausages, chicken nuggets, mini pizzas, fruit platters) and keep the format simple to serve. Same insurance and hygiene paperwork, gentler menu.

Giant-pan paella — club anniversaries & charity galas

A 1m pan cooked live in front of guests — good theatre for club centenaries, charity gala dinners, presentation balls. Around £10.95pp. Giant pan catering Cornwall →

Honest, committee-friendly pricing

We do not run a tiered discount scheme — the per-head rates you see are the rates we quote. What community and club events get instead is a sensible plan: the right menu for the headcount, no padding, no upsell, and a quote you can take straight to a committee meeting.

For a 200-guest school fete with a hog roast, we will work back from the ticket price you intend to charge and tell you honestly how many people you need through the door before the food is paid for. For a 60-guest club presentation, we will tell you whether a hot buffet or a BBQ is better value once you factor in chairs, tables and the bar staff being free to work the bar.

“The catering for our wake was well received by our guests, all of them gave back good fed back on selection of sandwiches, cake and scones. Thumbs up all round. Pasted on your details to several people who enquired as to who do the food.”

“Catered for our wedding and would highly recommend. Amazing service and really good pricing considering the amount and quality of the food. We catered for 40 guests and there was still way more than enough.”

Committee questions, answered

Yes. We invoice schools, registered charities, sports clubs and community organisations directly on 14-day payment terms. We also accept purchase orders if your finance system requires one. No need for a committee member or member of staff to pay on a personal card and claim it back.
We do not run a separate discount scheme — our standard rates are already pitched for community budgets, with cold buffets from £6.75pp and hot buffets from £8.50pp. For ticketed fundraisers we supply at trade rates and you set your own selling price per portion, so the fundraising margin stays with you.
Salt Wind Catering is a VAT-registered business and food supplied is charged at the standard catering rate. We invoice with VAT clearly itemised so your treasurer can reconcile against the event budget. If your charity is VAT-registered you can recover that VAT in the usual way.
A 30% deposit secures the date; the balance is due 7 days before the event. If the event is cancelled more than 14 days out the deposit is refundable; closer than that we retain the deposit to cover stock and labour already committed. We will always work with you sensibly if something genuinely changes.
Yes — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options are built into every menu. For a community event you will usually have a mix on the night, so we plan for that automatically. Specific severe allergies (nuts, coeliac) should be flagged at quote stage so we can advise on what is and is not safe in our kitchen. Allergen information is available on request per FIR 2014.
Yes — £5m public liability insurance, 5-star Food Hygiene Rating from Cornwall Council, full NCASS accreditation. Certificates are sent through with the quote so your school caretaker, hall committee or club chair can pre-approve us on site.
Delivered buffets start at a £30 minimum (around 5–6 people) which is too small for most committee events — most school, club and charity buffets we do are 40 to 250 guests. On-site cooking (hog roast, BBQ, giant-pan paella) has a 50-guest minimum because the cook-team set-up only makes sense at that scale.
