Salt Wind Catering provides emergency response catering within 300 road miles of Cornwall — on-scene welfare feeding for active incidents, multi-day resilience operations, and pre-arranged stand-by contracts. Storm response, flood response, highways closures, rail incidents, search operations, civil contingencies.

Cornwall mobilisation: 2 to 4 hours from a confirmed request. Devon mobilisation: 3 to 5 hours. Pre-arranged stand-by contracts (capacity held against an activation fee for a named operation or seasonal risk window) mobilise within 60 to 90 minutes of activation. Our mobile kitchen is fully self-contained — own gas, own water, own setup. No infrastructure required at the incident scene.

Procurement-side: net-30 accounts in place with the NHS, Cornwall Council and National Grid. Supplier paperwork, insurance documentation, and HACCP procedures available before deployment.

How an activation runs

Activation. Phone or email from the lead agency. We confirm location, crew size, anticipated duration, agency dietary requirements.
Mobilisation. Mobile kitchen loaded and on the road within 2–4 hours (Cornwall) or 3–5 hours (Devon). ETA confirmed back to the operational lead. Stand-by contracts activate within 60–90 minutes.
On-scene setup. Fully self-contained — own gas, own water, own pitch. We park where you tell us. Hot food and refreshments ready within 60 minutes of arrival.
Operation. Multi-day operations rotate cook teams to maintain 24/7 cover. Menu varies daily. Dietary list updated in writing as crews change over.
Stand-down & invoice. Pack down on order. Single net-30 invoice with full incident accounting attached — meal counts by day, agencies fed, hours on-scene, mileage.

300 road miles from the kitchen

Home ground first. Based in Redruth, central to the whole of Cornwall — Penzance to Bude, Land's End to the Tamar, and into Plymouth, Tavistock, Exeter, Dartmoor and the South Devon coast.

Beyond that we cover any incident within 300 road miles — the same area we publish for film and TV unit catering, because it is the same van and the same self-contained kit. The whole South West and South Wales, the South Coast and Sussex, the Thames Valley and Home Counties, London, and as far north as Birmingham and Leicester.

The mobilisation windows above are Cornwall and Devon figures. Outside those two counties we agree the window with you at the briefing call rather than publish a number we cannot hold — a long haul is a drive, and we will not pretend otherwise.

How quickly can you mobilise, and how far do you travel?

We cover any incident within 300 road miles of our Redruth kitchen — the same area we publish for film and TV unit catering, taking in the whole South West and South Wales, the South Coast, the Thames Valley and Home Counties, London, and north to Birmingham and Leicester. On mobilisation: within Cornwall, 2 to 4 hours from a confirmed request; into Devon, 3 to 5 hours depending on incident location. Further out we agree the window with you at the briefing call rather than publish a number we cannot hold. Do you work to 24/7 standing operations?

Yes — for multi-day incidents we rotate cook teams to maintain round-the-clock cover. Hot meals, refreshments and packed cold options for crews on the move. Menu varies daily so the same plate is not served twice in a row.

Who do you currently support on emergency response?

NHS trusts, Cornwall Council, National Grid (utility incident response), and the wider blue-light community across the South West. Net-30 public-sector accounts in place. Can you cater on-scene with no power, no kitchen and no water supply?

Yes. Our mobile kitchen is fully self-contained — own gas, own water tanks, own setup. We have catered on cliff-top operations, exposed moorland, flood-isolated sites, and overnight standbys with nothing but a flat patch of ground.

What dietary and welfare standards do you work to?

5-star FSA hygiene rating. NCASS membership. HACCP-aligned procedures. Full Public Liability Insurance. Dietary list management across multi-faith and multi-agency crews. Labelled food on the serving line. Documentation available before deployment.

How is emergency response work invoiced?

Net-30 invoice to the contracting agency on agreed public-sector accounts (no deposit). Full incident accounting attached to every invoice — meal counts by day, agencies fed, hours on-scene, mileage. Commercial emergency-response contractors invoiced on standard 30/70 split or net-30 by agreement.

Can you hold a pre-arranged standby contract?

What does "emergency response catering" cover that welfare catering doesn't?

Welfare catering covers planned operations and recurring site feeding (contractors, utilities, planned shutdowns). Emergency response is the unplanned activation — incident, storm, flood, multi-agency operation. Same kit, faster mobilisation, different procurement model.

Do you charge for travel or delivery?

Across Cornwall there is no travel charge and no minimum spend. Into Devon, travel is included on orders over £1,500 — or over £500 for Plymouth and Tavistock, which are closest to us. Below those figures it is £1 per mile round-trip from our Redruth kitchen, always confirmed in writing before you commit. Those are our delivered-catering terms and they apply within Cornwall and Devon only. Beyond Devon, travel and any crew accommodation are quoted per deployment and agreed in writing before you commit — the per-mile rate does not apply to an out-of-area incident.
