The Cornish Cottage Hen Weekend Scenario
You have rented a four-bedroom cottage in Padstow. Or a converted barn near St Agnes. Or that big Airbnb on the Lizard with the view down to Kynance Cove. Twelve people. Friday afternoon arrival, Sunday lunchtime departure. Two nights, three potential meals — Friday dinner, Saturday lunch or evening, Sunday brunch.
The bride or groom and the maid of honour or best person have done the hard work: booked the cottage, sorted the train tickets, planned the Saturday Coast Path walk. The food, traditionally, is the bit that gets left to a frantic Saturday morning Tesco run. That is the problem Salt Wind Catering solves.
Pre-Arrival Food Drop vs Saturday Cook
For Cornish cottage hen weekends, there are two clean patterns and one that does not work. Pattern one is the pre-arrival food drop. We deliver Friday platters at 4:30pm, leave them set up on the dining table or in the cottage fridge, and you walk in with the group at 6pm to a spread already waiting. This is the strongest opening move for a hen weekend.
Pattern two is the Saturday cook. For 30+ groups in a bigger property we can do an on-site BBQ on Saturday afternoon, with the 50-guest minimum for live cooking. For typical 8 to 20 guest hen weekends, a hot box delivery for Saturday's main meal is the right move: curry, lasagne, slow-cooked beef, all delivered hot in insulated boxes around 6:30pm.
Drinks-Friendly Catering (We Do Food, Not Bar)
Hen and stag weekends are drinks-led. Prosecco on arrival, gin and tonics in the garden, wine with dinner, something stronger after. Salt Wind Catering does not supply drinks — we are a cook team, no bar service, no cocktail stations. What we do is build food that works around the drinks.
Sharing platters that pick at over two hours rather than landing in a single course. Hot box meals heavy enough to soak up Saturday night. Brunch boards built to repair Sunday morning. Most groups grab drinks from a Co-op or supermarket on the way to the cottage. Our food sits alongside that, not against it.
Coast Path Walk, Then the Feast
The classic Cornish hen weekend rhythm: Friday night settle-in, Saturday morning leisurely brunch, Saturday afternoon Coast Path walk from the cottage — Padstow to Stepper Point, Lizard to Kynance, St Agnes to Chapel Porth — back to the cottage tired and hungry by 6pm, hot food on the table by 7.
A delivered hot box meal lands at 6:30pm exactly into that gap. The group walks back from the cliffs, kicks off boots, opens the fridge for prosecco, and dinner is already on the table. No one cooking, no one washing up a fortnight of pans.
Sample 2-Day Catering Brief (12 Guests)
Here is what a typical hen weekend booking looks like for 12 guests in a Cornish cottage. See the full event and party buffet menu for swaps and alternatives.
Friday 4:30pm drop — arrival sharing platters: Cornish buffet platters, three cheeses with chutney, sourdough and crackers, marinated olives, hummus and crudités, slow-roast beef sharing platter, dressed salad. Around £9.45 per head.
Saturday 6:30pm drop — hot box main meal: Thai green curry with jasmine rice, vegetable side, naan breads. Or lasagne and salad. Or slow-cooked beef with potatoes and roast veg. Around £13.25 per head delivered hot.
Sunday 10am drop — brunch boards: bacon rolls, smoked salmon bagels, pastries, fruit, granola pots, juice. Around £11 per head. Total: roughly £31 per head across the whole weekend, three meals, fully catered, no cooking required.
Why This Works for Hen and Stag Weekends
Three reasons hen and stag groups book Salt Wind Catering for cottage weekends rather than doing it themselves. First, time. The person organising has already done a month of planning. Catering for 12 yourself is a full day of prep, a Tesco run, and Saturday spent in the kitchen.
Second, the food is actually good — five-star food hygiene rating, NCASS accredited, locally sourced, cooked by people who cook for a living. Third, it scales: Sunday brunch for 12 looks the same on our end as Saturday dinner for 18 — same van, same insulated boxes, same setup time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you deliver to Airbnbs and holiday cottages across Cornwall?
Yes — most hen and stag bookings we take are dropped to a holiday cottage, barn conversion or Airbnb. We need the postcode, a delivery window and someone on site to take the drop. Platters arrive on disposable trays, set up and ready to serve. No kitchen access needed.
Can I book all three weekend meals on one quote?
Yes. Friday platters, Saturday hot box, Sunday brunch on one quote and one invoice. One main contact, three delivery slots. Most weekend bookings are a combination of at least two of the three.
What is the minimum group size?
Delivered catering starts at a £30 minimum order (around 5–6 people). For 8 to 20 guests, delivered platters and hot box meals are the right format. On-site BBQ or hog roast cooking needs a 50-guest minimum, so that only kicks in for larger stag and hen weekends.
Do you supply drinks, cocktails or prosecco?
No — we are food only. No bar service, no cocktails, no prosecco supply. Most groups grab drinks from a supermarket or off-licence on the way to the cottage. Our food is designed to work alongside drinks, not include them.
How far in advance should I book?
Three to six weeks for most weekends. Peak summer Saturdays (June–August) fill up fastest, so 6–8 weeks ahead is safer. Short-notice enquiries sometimes work. Call 01209 206255 with the dates and we will check.
What if the cottage has a tiny kitchen or no oven?
Not a problem. Cold platters and brunch boards need no kitchen access at all. Hot box meals arrive hot in insulated boxes — they hold temperature for around 90 minutes, so most groups eat straight from the box without reheating. No oven required.
