Hen weekends, stag dos, no fuss

You have rented a cottage in Padstow, a barn near St Agnes, an Airbnb on the Lizard. Twelve people are arriving Friday night. Someone (probably you) is organising it. The last thing you want is to spend Saturday afternoon at Tesco buying party platters.

That is what we do. Salt Wind Catering is a small Cornish cook team — five-star food hygiene, NCASS accredited, properly insured. We drop food to the cottage, set it out on platters, and leave you to the prosecco. Friday grazing boards, Saturday hot meal, Sunday brunch — book the whole weekend on one quote or just the meal that matters.

Most hen and stag groups we cater for are between 8 and 20 guests, which is exactly where delivered catering makes the most sense. On-site cooking (BBQ, hog roast, paella) only kicks in at 50+ guests, so for typical hen weekends the answer is almost always platters and hot boxes dropped to your door.

Three formats that work

Friday arrival feast

Grazing boards, charcuterie, dips, breads, sharing platters. Drops at 5pm, ready when the group walks through the door with the prosecco. Cold, set out, no heating needed.

From £6.75pp

Saturday main meal

Hot box buffet — curry, lasagne, slow-cooked beef, veggie tagine — delivered in insulated boxes, served on platters. Or a garden BBQ if you are 50+.

From £8.50pp

Sunday brunch boards

Bacon rolls, pastries, fruit, smoked salmon bagels, granola pots. Dropped late morning to soak up Saturday night. The kindest meal of the weekend, no cooking required.

What actually works for hen and stag weekends

Front-load Friday night

Friday is when the group lands, drops bags, opens the first bottle. A spread already laid out on the dining table is the strongest welcome you can do. Cheese, charcuterie, sourdough, marinated olives, hummus, dips, a slow-roast beef sharing platter. Picks at it for two hours, soaks up the first round.

Saturday is the main meal

Pick one proper sit-down food moment for Saturday. For 8–20 guests that means a hot box meal — Cornish curry night, Thai green curry, lasagne and salad, slow-cooked beef with all the trimmings. We deliver hot, on insulated trays, served straight onto platters. See the full buffet range.

Sunday is brunch, then home

After Saturday night, nobody wants to cook. A brunch board drop at 10am — bacon rolls, pastries, granola, smoked salmon bagels — is genuinely the best £10 per head you will spend. Eat, pack up, drive home.

Garden BBQ if you are 30+

Bigger stag or hen groups in a barn or paddock setup can do a live charcoal BBQ. We turn up with the kit, cook in front of the group, plate up. Note: on-site cooking starts at a 50-guest minimum, so this is for the larger weekends only.

“The catering for our wake was well received by our guests, all of them gave good feedback on the selection of sandwiches, cake and scones. Thumbs up all round. Passed on your details to several people who enquired as to who do the food.”

Hen and stag catering, answered

Most hen and stag weekends we cater for sit between 8 and 20 guests. For 8 to 20, the right answer is almost always a delivered cold buffet, grazing board, or hot box meal dropped at the holiday cottage. For larger groups of 30 to 50, an on-site BBQ or paella works, though on-site cooking has a 50-guest minimum.
Yes — most of our hen and stag bookings are delivered straight to a holiday cottage, barn conversion or Airbnb. We need a postcode, a delivery window, and someone on site to take the drop. Platters arrive on disposable trays, set up and ready to serve. No kitchen access or cooking required from you.
Yes, full-weekend bookings are common. A typical brief: Friday arrival grazing platters (cold), Saturday main meal (hot box buffet or on-site BBQ if 50+), Sunday brunch boards. Bundling all three on one quote is straightforward — one delivery slot per day, one invoice, one main contact.
No — we are a cook team, not a bar service. We do not supply drinks, prosecco, cocktails or bar staff. Most groups grab drinks from a local supermarket or off-licence on the way to the cottage. Our food is designed to work alongside whatever you are drinking, not replace it.
Cold grazing platters and finger buffets start from £6.75 per head. Hot box meals (curry, lasagne, slow-cooked beef) from £8.50 per head. On-site BBQ from £14 per head (50-guest minimum). For a typical 12-person hen weekend with Friday platters, Saturday hot meal and Sunday brunch boards, budget roughly £45–£60 per head across the whole weekend.
Delivered orders come on disposable trays with napkins. We do not supply china, glassware, table linen or front-of-house waiting staff — we are cook team only. Most holiday cottages have enough plates and cutlery for the group; if not, a quick supermarket run sorts it for under £20.
Three to six weeks ahead for most weekends. Peak summer Saturdays (June to August) fill up fastest — book 6–8 weeks ahead. Short-notice enquiries sometimes work, especially for delivered platters. Call us on 01209 206255 and we will check availability against the dates you have.
