Emergency Catering Services Cornwall: Same-Day and Short-Notice Briefs

Emergency catering covers any brief outside the normal 4 to 12-week lead time — same-day, next-day, or short-notice. Across Cornwall it falls into four shapes: short-notice corporate, weather welfare, contractor incidents, and last-minute wakes. Salt Wind Catering is NCASS-registered and can mobilise inside 2 to 4 hours from Redruth. Call 01209 206255.

What actually counts as emergency catering?

The label gets used loosely. Worth being precise. Genuine emergency catering means one of four scenarios. A caterer cancelled on you, which is more common than people realise particularly in summer wedding season. The weather changed your plans and you need food at a different location, fast. A site incident — power cut, contractor welfare, displacement — needs hot meals immediately. A wake or short-notice family event needs feeding for 50 people tomorrow.

It does not mean "I forgot to book and the event is in three weeks." That is a last-minute booking, not an emergency, and we handle it through the normal quote process.

Short-notice corporate catering

Client meeting appearing from nowhere. Board lunch added to a Monday agenda on a Friday afternoon. Film crew schedule change. These run smooth because the food is straightforward — sandwich platters, hot fork buffet, or a working lunch box drop. We can typically turn next-day sandwich and savoury platters across Cornwall, and same-day where kitchen capacity allows. Hot buffet platters need 24 hours minimum.

Weather emergency and crisis welfare

This is the heavy end. After the red-warning Storm Goretti event in Cornwall, Salt Wind Catering was deployed on behalf of National Grid and on site in Penryn within 3 hours of the call, feeding a community without power across four days. We are NCASS-registered and equipped to run fully self-contained on bottled gas — no venue power or water required, which matters when grid and water are both down.

For councils, utility companies and emergency response organisations we hold a separate priority contact for welfare deployments. Hot meals, hot drinks, sandwiches, baby-formula warm water, and food for dietary requirements — all scalable based on welfare numbers. The full storm Goretti account, including the Command Hub model we now propose for town resilience, is on the blog.

Contractor welfare and site incidents

Construction sites, infrastructure projects and trade contractors call us when a normal canteen plan falls over or a shift extension means feeding a crew that wasn't planned for. We have catered construction site welfare across Cornwall and can mobilise hot breakfasts and lunches for crews of 30 to 200 inside the working day. Self-contained gas means no site power draw and no waiting on a generator.

Last-minute wakes and short-notice family catering

The call we take most often outside business hours. A death in the family, 50 to 80 people arriving tomorrow, the host has not slept. Sandwich platters and savoury platters are the quickest to prepare and we can usually turn those next-day. For a hot fork buffet at a wake we need 24 to 48 hours. We are gentle on the phone and quick to send a confirmed quote so the host can stop chasing food and start dealing with everything else.

When we say yes, when we say no

We pick up the phone and give a straight answer inside minutes. If we can do it we say yes with a firm price. If we can't — capacity already committed, distance too far for the timeline, brief not safely achievable — we say no clearly. We do not point you elsewhere. We are honest about what is possible. That is the entire offer.

How to make the call

Do not fill in a form. Do not send an email and hope. Call 01209 206255 and tell us what you need. We will give an honest answer within minutes on what we can do, what it will cost, and when it will be with you. We are based in Redruth and cover Cornwall and Devon.
