How Far Ahead Should You Book a Film & TV Caterer in Cornwall? | Salt Wind Catering
Book your film and TV location caterer as soon as your shoot dates and unit base are confirmed — ideally three to six weeks ahead for a standard shoot, and earlier for summer dates or large, multi-week productions. Salt Wind Catering also takes short-notice and last-minute bookings; earlier just buys more time for menu, dietary and access planning. Costed quote back within 48 hours.
When should you book film catering?
Book as soon as your shoot dates and unit base location are confirmed. For a standard one to three day shoot, three to six weeks' notice is comfortable. For summer dates, or a large unit or multi-week production, book earlier — Cornwall is a busy filming region from late spring to autumn and the best dates go first. If you're past that window, ask anyway: as a local South-West team we absorb short notice better than a caterer mobilising from up-country.
Why earlier is better
More notice doesn't change the price — it changes how much we can tailor. With a few weeks in hand we can plan the menu around your crew and dietary spread, attend or brief an access recce for remote locations, lock the kitchen team to your dates, and order from our named Cornish suppliers on a normal lead time rather than a rush.
Can you cater a short-notice or last-minute shoot?
Yes. Schedules move, dates get added, a caterer falls through — that's the job. Being based in Redruth and fully self-contained means we can turn around short-notice crew catering across Cornwall and Devon without a long mobilisation. To move fast we need four things up front: shoot dates, crew size, the location, and the dietary spread.
What we need to confirm a booking
Shoot dates and daily call times.
Crew size — we cater roughly 20 to 500 a day.
Location(s) and unit base — especially if remote or off-grid.
Dietary spread — vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, allergies.
Which service you want — hot-boxed to set, or our mobile kitchen cooking on location.
Peak season in Cornwall
Cornwall is one of the UK's busiest filming regions in summer, and crew caterers, unit bases and facilities all get tight from June to September. If your shoot lands in that window, treat booking as a priority once dates firm up — and remember catering pairs with our facilities partner JW Film Facilities for a coordinated unit base, which is easier to place early than late.
