How does Salt Wind Catering feed a complete film unit base in Cornwall and Devon?

Salt Wind Catering feeds your whole crew from breakfast at call time through to wrap: hot lunches at the truck, craft service on rotation, and clearly labelled dietary lists across cast and crew. Our self-contained mobile kitchen needs no infrastructure at the unit base, reaching remote no-power sites across Cornwall and Devon. Crew catering starts from £30 +VAT per head; facilities are quoted separately by JW Film Facilities, with both tailored per production by quote.

Aligned

Production sustainability

A BAFTA albert-aligned crew caterer

Salt Wind Catering is built to the sustainability standards BAFTA albert sets for film & TV: four Cornish food suppliers on home ground, all inside 47 miles, fresh bought in near the unit base on a distant run, vegan and gluten-free options at every service, made-to-order service against the call-sheet headcount, food waste logged for your production's report, and plant-based packaging. albert certifies productions, not caterers, so what we give you is the per-event sustainability statement your coordinator drops straight into the albert carbon calculator.

How we align

A complete film unit base brings every off-camera need into one coordinated setup. Salt Wind Catering provides the crew catering and craft; JW Film Facilities provides honey wagons, green rooms, makeup and costume, dining, transport and power. Two specialists who already work together across Cornwall and Devon, booked once, contracted as two separate companies. We have catered 700+ events across Cornwall & Devon since 2024, hold 5.0★ from 67 reviews, and feed crews from 20 upwards.

The challenge

A remote, off-grid Cornwall location with no mains services and a narrow single-track approach, and a crew that still needs feeding, changing and a warm place to sit.

The old way

Three or four suppliers from up-country who have never met, each guessing at access, all arriving at once, and a unit manager refereeing instead of running the day.

The coordinated way

Catering on at call. Honey wagon in position. Green room stocked. The location manager on the radio, not the phone, because the unit base was placed once, by two local teams who've done it before, together.

[ 02 ] Local, coordinated, low-impact

Can a unit base reach remote West Country locations?

JW runs smaller, greener vehicles made for narrow Cornish lanes and remote locations, including a compact honey wagon for close-to-set deployment where full-size up-country fleets cannot reach. Paired with Salt Wind Catering's self-contained mobile kitchen and local sourcing, it's a unit base that suits productions with sustainability targets.

[ 03 ] Local vs nationwide

Why book a local unit-base caterer?

On the ground in the South-West versus a nationwide caterer travelling in, what changes for your production.

A local South-West unit-base caterer compared with a nationwide caterer travelling in
Consideration	Salt Wind Catering on the ground in the South-West	A nationwide caterer travelling in
Response & lead time	Local team; quotes typically the same day during office hours and a recce that doesn't need a day's drive first.	Slower to mobilise; site visits mean a long haul before a single decision is made.
Cornish location knowledge	We already know the lanes, the hardstandings and the no-power coves from Bude to the Lizard.	Guessing at access from a map; surprises on the day cost the unit time.
Road miles & carbon	Short runs from our Redruth base, fewer road miles and lower carbon on your production's footprint.	Hundreds of miles each way, billed back to you and added to the shoot's emissions.
Self-contained on remote / no-power sites	Self-contained mobile kitchen: no mains power or venue kitchen needed on remote sites.	Often depends on supplied power or a venue kitchen that a clifftop simply doesn't have.

Sustainability

A greener unit base

Salt Wind Catering sets up at your unit base with its own mobile kitchen, made to order against the call sheet with plant-based packaging, and we are an albert-aligned supplier for productions working to sustainability targets. Commercials and brand shoots report to AdGreen instead, and the per-event sustainability statement covers either. We source from four Cornish suppliers, all within 47 miles of our kitchen, keeping food miles and the unit base's footprint low.

[ 04 ] Coverage

Where do you cover?

Bude to the Lizard · Plymouth to Exeter

Salt Wind Catering is based in Redruth; JW Film Facilities in central Cornwall. We work each location on its own access terms, not a postcode list, a plan.

Remote clifftops & coves: Drop-and-serve from the nearest hardstanding; compact honey wagon close to set.
Narrow single-track lanes: JW's smaller West Country vehicles where full-size up-country fleets can't reach.
Car-park-only locations: Scheduled hot-box rounds to your call sheet; unit base placed at the access point.

TV feature film

FFP New Media

Heart Waves / Herzwellen

Up to 60 cast & crew daily
Hayle, Penryn, Harlyn Bay, Padstow

'Heart Waves / Herzwellen', a German-language television film in the long-running Rosamunde Pilcher series, produced by FFP New Media for ZDF and filmed on location across Cornwall over 21 shoot days in June and July 2026. A Salt Wind Catering team was on set throughout, moving with the unit between locations all over the county, hot breakfasts, lunch and all-day craft services for the daily crew and cast, with dietary requirements managed end-to-end.

Television commercial

Academy Films

Charlie Bigham’s TVC, Cadgwith Cove

50 crew
Cadgwith Cove (the Lizard, Cornwall)

A one-day television commercial for Charlie Bigham’s, produced by Academy Films, shot in Cadgwith Cove on the Lizard. Fifty crew, and no vehicle access to the location, the unit parked at the top of the hill and walked down to the cove. Salt Wind Catering pitched a self-contained mobile kitchen in a field above the village, on site from 05:30, and hot-boxed every service down to the crew so nobody had to climb back up for a meal. The production asked for a food truck; what the job actually needed was a kitchen that could work where a truck cannot go.

Location shoot

Locations Wales

FatFace

23 crew, plus the models
Llandovery (Carmarthenshire), Llyn y Fan Fach (Bannau Brycheiniog)

Two-day location shoot high in the Welsh mountains for FatFace, 23 crew plus the models, fed at two remote sites in Carmarthenshire and Bannau Brycheiniog, the second of them only reachable by 4x4. No venue, no mains power, no water and no hookup at either. Salt Wind Catering travelled up from Cornwall fully self-contained and worked to the call sheet to the minute: on location for a 07:00 catering pre-call, a full hour before the 08:00 unit call, both days. Rolling hot breakfast at 08:30 as the crew came off the transit run, a hot lunch served on location in the one-hour window at 13:15, craft table restocked at both breaks, and tea and filtered coffee running from pre-call to an 18:00 wrap.

Complete unit base FAQs

What is a complete film unit base?

Do I deal with one company or two?

Why book a coordinated unit base instead of separate suppliers?

Coordination. Catering and facilities that already work together place the unit base once, share access logistics, and avoid the clashes that come from suppliers who have never met. For remote Cornwall and Devon locations, that coordination is what stops a unit manager spending the morning on the phone because the caterer took the only lorry-accessible pitch and the honey wagon can no longer reach set.

Can a full unit base reach remote Cornwall locations?

What areas do you cover?

How do I get a quote for a complete unit base?

Use the production quote form or call Salt Wind Catering on 01209 206255. Tell us your shoot dates, locations, crew size and what you need on both the catering and facilities side. We will get a coordinated set of quotes back to you, typically the same day during office hours. As a guide, Salt Wind's crew catering starts from £30 +VAT per head; JW Film Facilities quotes the facilities separately on spec.
