Travelling from our Cornwall base: Surrey sits 240–250 road miles away, inside our 300-mile service radius. Travel is calculated from your studio or unit-base postcode and agreed in writing up front; multi-day shoots include crew accommodation. The self-contained kitchen means no studio catering facility is needed.

On-set catering for Surrey productions
Salt Wind Catering feeds film and TV crews across Surrey — the county that holds Shepperton and Longcross, and the woodland at Bourne Wood that has stood in for more centuries and continents than almost any exterior location in Britain. The mobile kitchen is fully self-contained and the schedule is built backwards from your call sheet.
Surrey is a well-served catering market, and we are honest about what we are for. Where a studio stage already has a house caterer in place, that is their day. Where we earn the job is the location half of a Surrey schedule — Bourne Wood, the Surrey Hills, a National Trust estate with no facility and no mains — and the productions running multi-location shoots where the same cook team follows the unit rather than being re-tendered county by county. One shoot day or twenty: we do not require a multi-day block to take the booking.
That second case is the one we know best. Back-to-back features across fourteen locations is a different catering problem from a fixed stage block: the food has to be consistent when the base changes every few days, and the team has to already know how your unit runs. It is the shape of work we are built around.
Distance is priced honestly. Guildford is 242 road miles from our kitchen and Shepperton 251 — inside the radius we cover, but far enough that travel and, on anything past a single day, crew accommodation go into the quote at the outset. Producers get a written figure the same day during office hours, and that figure is what appears on the invoice.
Coverage
We travel to set — from Cornwall to Surrey
Unit catering is a travel-to-location business. From our Cornwall base the self-contained mobile kitchen reaches your unit base anywhere within 300 road miles — travel, and accommodation for multi-day shoots, agreed in writing up front.
Surrey Coverage
Surrey filming locations we cater
A non-exhaustive list — studio, backlot, woodland and estate bases across the county.
Shepperton Studios
One of the UK’s major stage complexes, on the Spelthorne side of the county. Studio-yard bases with hardstanding and straightforward vehicle access — the easiest kind of Surrey day.
Longcross Studios
Stages plus a large backlot and vehicle-test track at Chertsey. Room for a full unit base on hardstanding, and space to cook live where the schedule allows it.
Bourne Wood, Farnham
Forestry England woodland used as an exterior location for decades. A working forest, so we base wherever vehicle access allows and carry hot food the last stretch to unit if the pitch is set back.
Painshill, Polesden Lacey & Loseley
Landscape gardens and country houses, several National Trust. Estate agreements govern vehicle positions; we base where the site allows and run hot food in.
Surrey Hills & Box Hill
Chalk downland and woodland in an AONB. Narrow lanes and limited parking mean a small base footprint and a load-in planned with the location manager.
Brooklands & Weybridge
The old motor circuit, aviation halls and museum buildings. Hardstanding bases with good access — straightforward for a full unit-base service.
Live cooking at the unit base
Crews respond to a fire and a smell in the air. We cook live at base wherever the location allows.
Hog roast
Cornish pork joints slow-roasted over hours at unit base. Crackling, apple sauce, fresh rolls — a wrap-day favourite.
Charcoal BBQ
Real charcoal grilling at the unit base. Flexible portion rounds, multiple proteins, sides cooked alongside.
Giant pan
Paellas, curries and tagines cooked in front of the crew. Cost-effective at scale and a proper morale lift.
Street food
Live-cooked street-food formats — flatbreads, gyros, loaded fries, tacos. Fast service, hot food, short queues.
Travel & Scheduling
How a Cornwall-based unit caterer works a Surrey shoot
The honest logistics, agreed in writing before you commit — no day-of surprises.
The distance is real, and it is priced up front
Guildford is 242 road miles from our kitchen and Shepperton 251 — inside the 300-mile radius we cover, and quoted from your studio or unit-base postcode before you book rather than estimated and revised later.
Multi-day blocks include crew accommodation
A single day we can turn around from Cornwall. A week in Surrey means the cook team stays local, and that accommodation is in the quote at the outset. It is what makes an early call realistic rather than aspirational, and it is cheaper than the alternative of a tired team.
One team across a multi-location schedule
Where a production moves between bases, the same cook team follows the unit rather than being re-tendered at each new county. The food stays consistent and nobody spends the first morning of a new location explaining how your unit runs.
Quote back the same day during office hours
Send shoot dates, the studio or unit-base postcode, crew numbers and the dietary breakdown. You get a written quote the same day during office hours with travel, accommodation and dietary cover already in it.
On The Ground
What we need from a Surrey unit base — and what we bring
Surrey swings between purpose-built studio hardstanding and working forestry with no mains anything. The plan changes accordingly.
Studio and backlot bases
Shepperton and Longcross are built for units: hardstanding, room to park, straightforward access. That is the simple end of a Surrey schedule — park up, set up, feed the crew at base or stage-door, and cook live where the backlot allows it.
Working woodland — Bourne Wood
Forestry access means tracks rather than roads and no mains services at all. We base at the track head and carry hot food the last stretch to unit. The kitchen runs entirely off its own gas, generators, water and refrigeration, which is the whole reason woodland bases work.
National Trust and private estates
Painshill, Polesden Lacey and Loseley come with agreements that govern where vehicles sit and for how long. We take the position the site allows rather than pushing for a closer pitch, and run hot food in from there.
Surrey Hills and AONB lanes
Narrow lanes, limited parking and landscape protection make a large base a non-starter in much of the AONB. A small footprint and a load-in timed with the location manager is the workable version, and it is how we plan those days from the outset.

“We had big pans from salt wind for our wedding and the food was AMAZING. Mark and his team could not have been more helpful throughout the whole process and were a dream to work with. Nothing was ever too much trouble and so many people have said how lovely the food was. I’d book them for another event in a heart beat!”
“Just returned from my wifes 50th birthday party and the caterers were superb. Salt Wind Catering provided top quality food and plenty of it the party was for 50 people and we had plenty. Special mention for the amazing coleslaw and chicken they were totally scrumptious! Will definitely use again and can highly recommend Salt Wind thanks for your great service!!”
